The original Tane Vegan Izakaya was born in 2019 when Chef Kin Lui, one of the founders of Shizen Vegan Sushi Bar in San Francisco, returned to his hometown of Honolulu after living in the Bay Area for many years. Tane was created as a combination of the lessons he had learned at Shizen with the unique personality of his island home.
In 2022, the Shizen and Tane team decided to bring their plant-based sushi concept -- now sweetened by tropical sun and enriched by Hawaiian culture -- back to the Bay. We welcome you to come and dine with us at Tane Vegan Izakaya: Berkeley.
The newest member of our restaurant family, Chef Lawton was born in Canton and has spent the last 14 years here in the Bay Area practicing the art of sushi. He is passionate about creating new solutions to the world’s problems using light-footprint ingredients an harmonious cooking techniques.
Chef Lawton is running the shop here in Berkeley and we couldn't be happier about it. He has been a dear friend of the Shizen Founders for many years and we are very lucky to have him on the team.
